What is Nutrition Counseling?

Orange Flowers

Nutrition counseling is a mix between a therapist session and a doctor’s visit. I use several different therapeutic counseling approaches to create the space to explore thoughts, feelings, emotions and beliefs surrounding food and body image to help you understand the WHY behind your behaviors. At the same time, as a registered dietitian, I am trained in medical nutrition therapy to provide evidence-based nutrition recommendations that are individualized to your physical & mental health needs.

What We Believe

Food should not be a source of guilt, shame or regret.

Life has enough stress without food being a cause of it. Let's free up some brain space to think about other things. Eating a certain way does not make you good or bad; food has no moral values. This way of thinking can lead to unrealistic food rules and feeling like we're doing something wrong when we're finding joy from food, celebrating, embracing culture, creativity and all the other roles food plays.

All bodies are good bodies.

Our work is informed from a weight-inclusive, Health At Every Size approach. Weight is not a behavior, and not something we have full control over. Many weight loss diets lead to weight cycling (losing, gaining, rinse & repeat), disordered eating and are often not sustainable. We choose to focus on health-promoting behaviors like eating and drinking patterns, macronutrient distribution, physical activity, gaining more insight into hunger and fullness cues and many more aspects of health. We do not prescribe weight loss.

Nutrition is not one-size fits all.

We believe in body and health autonomy. We are here to support you with exploring beliefs, making recommendations and being the guide around all things food and body, but you get to make the decisions. We'll hold hope until you can find it yourself and we'll celebrate every victory you have along your journey to finding peace with food.

Welcome

Caitlyn Neuendorf, MS, RD, LD

Hello! Thanks for being here! I'm Caitlyn, a registered dietitian & owner of Fuel Your Freedom. I've worked in the eating disorder field for most my career and witnessed how diets, disordered eating and just general stress around food and body image rob joy from people's lives. This led me to my passion of utilizing a weight-inclusive approach and evidence-based behavioral interventions to help people heal their relationship with food & body.

Trained in Nutrition Counseling utilizing: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family-Based Therapy (FBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT),  & Motivational Interviewing (MI).
